Growing up as a child in southern Texas, we had what I discovered later while going through an encyclopedia was a traditional, Mexican Easter egg.
What we would do weeks before Easter is start eating scrambled eggs by poking a small hole in each end of the egg and blowing out the egg and cooking it. After you have accumulated all your eggs, you then color them and let them dry and then we would cut out small pieces of paper, different colors as confetti and then put the confetti in the egg and tape the ends.
After the Easter egg hunt, you then have a lot of fun breaking the Easter egg on everyone’s head and the confetti decorates the hair and the area. When I moved to California, I saw everybody was boiling eggs and I couldn’t understand. What are you gotta do with all these eggs?
I taught the kids at our church how to do this and from then on we always had the Mexican Easter eggs which ironically now you can buy cartons of Mexican Easter eggs at Walmart.
In the photo there is a light green egg and what looks like spinach leaves, but no directions for that colour. Is this a thing? Has anyone tried this?
Hi Lisa-
It works well, but the process is a bit different. To create spinach dye, start by finely chopping the spinach or other vegetable pieces. Place them in a small saucepan and add double the amount of water. Bring the mixture to a boil, then let it simmer for an hour. After cooling, strain the dye thoroughly. Now, you're ready to use the spinach dye for coloring eggs.
Thanks! I'm going to play around with this! I wonder what the different coloured kales and chards will produce? :)
Did you leave your eggs in the dye in the fridge or keep them room temp?
Thanks for these interesting ways to dye Easter eggs naturally. As a kid (way back when) we also used to dye them using onion skins, but wrapped a raw egg in onion skin using string to hold it in place and then boiled the egg. This would make the color of the egg more 'swirly' and patterned like an onion skin instead of an even or solid color.
My Aunt used to dye her eggs in coffee
I once boiled some Eggs with fresh Beets; the Eggs were a lavendar-violet vibrant color! I have also used plain Tea to color white eggs; Beets work better;
