My mother always used lard for pie crust, she died when I was 8 but I always watched her. Then at 16 I had to live with Aunt Eliza (my brothers had to go to WWII) and she always used lard. So I, at 93, still use lard. It makes the best flaky crust, even if you get a little too much. I keep a flour/lard mix in the fridge so I only have to use enough for my one pie..
