Tips for Baking a Better Pie
This recipe is all over the place. The steps seem to be mixed up. Had I not just looked at another pie crust recipe, I would have been totally lost!!
Hi, Carol. This is not meant as a recipe, but a primer for what you need and best tips for making a pie crust. If you want to follow a recipe, we have many: Butter Flaky Pie Crust, Basic Pie Crust, Three-Grain Butter Pastry, and Almond Crumb Crust.
My grandmother's recipe that I use all the time is so easy and so good. If you are making a one crust pie: 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup shortening, 1/4 cup water. For two crust just double everything. Just remember that how many crust you want to make that is the amount of flour you use, then half that amount is shortening and half the amount of shortening is the water.
I worked with a chef who used vodka instead of water for the crust to keep gluten from forming
Uncle loves it when I used vodka instead of water. I made a lovely chicken pie with this crust. Uncle even said that it helped with his lumbago. Thanks
Dutch.
Beautiful and wonderful tips
In 1999 I bought my first Farmer's Almanac. In it was a recipe for an apple, pear, cranberry pie with a crumble top. I made it for Thanksgiving for years and after our last move lost the recipe. I've been searching websites but can't find it. Do you think you could find it for me? It had become a family favorite and has been sorely missed the last 3 years. Thanks.
Would you also be able to share that pie recipe with me. Thank you.
