If your ideal cookie comes with a cup of coffee (or tastes like one), these Chocolate Coffee Oatmeal Sugar Cookies are about to become your new favorite. With deep cocoa flavor, a hint of coffee, and hearty oats for chewiness, they strike the perfect balance between indulgent and comforting. Simple to make and quick to bake, these cookies deliver big flavor in every bite: no fancy ingredients required. Perfect for afternoon pick-me-ups, bake sales, or whenever chocolate cravings hit.

This recipe won second place in the Coffee Recipe Contest featured in The 2011 Old Farmer’s Almanac.

Ingredients
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/4 cup instant coffee
2 cups whole wheat flour
1-3/4 cups rolled oats
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
2 cups brown sugar
2 eggs, beaten

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 350ºF.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar, cocoa powder, and coffee. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, oats, baking soda, and baking powder. In a large bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar.
  3. Add the coffee mixture and mix until it becomes mealy. Add the eggs and blend well. Add the flour mixture and stir until combined.
  4. Form 1-inch balls and arrange them on ungreased cookie sheets. Press each ball lightly with a fork.
  5. Bake for 8 to 12 minutes, or until the cookies are firm enough to lift off the cookie sheets. Cool.

What kind of rolled oats? Quaker one minute or Quaker old fashioned?

They aren't the same thing. One minute are more highly processed to cook quickly. While you can substitute them for rolled you'll sacrifice the chewy texture the rolled oats provide.

How do I make these Chocolate Coffee Oatmeal Sugar Cookies using regular flour? wheat flour costs more where I live and I would have a limited use it for anything else.

Hi, Sharon. You can make this substitution, but add an extra tablespoon of all-purpose flour per cup.
