Plus: How Long Different Cut Flowers Last
How much "flower food" do you add to a vase of cut flowers?
Hi Brian,
You can use our recipe outlined above:
(Make your own flower food to nourish flowers. It makes a big difference to extend the life of the flowers. Mix 2 tablespoons white vinegar, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 1 quart of lukewarm water.)
Depending on how large your vase is you may have to adjust the amount of white vinegar and sugar to match the amount of water the vase holds. You can also mix the recipe above and then just use what you need and discard the rest.
Hope this helps1
I was surprised to see that alstromerias were not included in your long lived cut flowers. Is there a reason not to include them in an arrangement? In a vase by themselves they can last as long as three weeks.
Ideal refrigerator temps are between 32 and 40 degrees. That’s the same range you give for florists’ coolers.
Hydrangeas love to have their heads plunged into cold water as soon as they are cut out in the garden. Then immediately put the stem ends into the same cold water. Bring them inside And put wet paper towels over the blooms. Let sit for at least three hours or overnight. They will last at least a week to 10 days or more. I did this one morning when it was in the 90s. I made the bouquet and brought it out on the covered porch for a birthday party celebration, and even in the heat and high humidity they never flagged. I brought them in that evening and they held for another week and a half at least.
I have day lilies in a smaller bud vase. I cut them just as first was near to opening. It opened on day three, followed by second four days later. The first is now showing some wilt after ten days. Each flower is about 6" in dia..
I'm just going to put some flowers in my new apartment. I don't know which one to choose yet. Will, for example, Hebe (a plant somewhat like a round hedge) also work well at home? It always grows into a ball, with small green leaves. I mean dense plants that are easy to grow.
