An Apple a Day Might Just Keep the Doctor Away!

Another great aspect of apples not discussed. Back in the good ole days when I was a kid about 10 years old on the farm in upper VT, NEK had to be about 1950 (11 year old kid), a few of kids would go to an apple orchard and gather green apples. The orchards didn't have any specific type, they were green. Then we'd knock off a hunk of cow salt and sit by a small stream and eat green apples with the salt rubbed in. Thee salt dampened the sourness. Once in a while the apple was so sour, the salt didn't overcome the problem. It would leave one to cringe and squint the eyes and shake the head. It was thrown away for the next green apple. Couldn't ripen those greenies, regardless. Not a care in those cherished days. But we worked hard on the dairy farm, before hay balers. Had to handle loose hay and store it in the barn Try my experience some time. Never forget..

I've always heard you peirced the apple with a ten penny nail (iron) overnight 1st. Not sidelining the obvious benifits of fruits and vegetables, but, the nail was to leach iron into the apple for an additional health boost.
P.S. Don't use an aluminium nail. No one needs extra aluminium in their diet.
