I don't know where you live that you get it for 7 dollars a bundle. On Long Island it's about 12 to 14 dollars for a very small "bale". Be aware that on some areas it may not be economical to use it.
Love straw and I have been using it for years. Always bought it from the same place with no problems. This year was different. The straw was not the same quality. Different texture, more clumps that had a moldy odor. Long green grass-like sprouts are coming up all over my garden and pollinator beds. It very time consuming to keep pulling the sprouts up, and impossible to stay ahead of their growth. Next year I will switch to pine needles to avoid this problem.
After reading the comments I would like to add one thing - many of the people who sell straw at nurseries and hardware stores don't know the difference between hay and straw. They also don't know the difference between good straw and straw bales that are full of weeds so it's a matter of the customer having to learn the difference.
I used straw mulch in my first garden bed during COVID and now can’t garden without it. It’s so pleasing ‘tucking in’ my plants and ‘making their beds.’ That soil does not like being exposed, and wood mulch always feels like overkill. Straw mulch makes gardening feel that much more beautiful.
Thank you for sharing. I laid down straw in my beds in the fall. It works beautifully to reduce weeds and the birds love it to make their nests.
I use straw off and on. It makes my gardens and flowerbeds look amazing.....at first. Then it grows and the whole area is covered with green sprouts. So I have to either just let it grow or spend time pulling the sprouts. And yes it IS straw not hay.
Yes, same here. Will switch to pine needles, and find a new supplier.
Same here. Ruined my garden. I’ll be spending more time removing cereal weeds than any other activity in my garden. I made sure to ask for straw, not hay. There is no way the hay would contain anymore weed seeds than what I got here. I basically just sodded my nearly weed free garden.
Maybe you need a new source for straw. I use straw and usually only a small amount sprouts. And the sprouts are easy to pull. Much better than weeding.
This looks like the perfect solution to my wanting more raised beds in my garden. I have 6, but it's never enough! I use my raised beds to grow "sensible" plants, such as paste tomatoes for canning, and peas for freezing. This will allow me to grow more, such as peppers, heirloom tomatoes, and other plants that I'd only harvest in the late summer. So I'll give this a try, and I can tell you my husband already thanks you for distracting me from begging for more beds that he'd have to build!
