GPS is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but it is like looking at the world through a key hole. You still need a paper map to get the big picture when planing a trip.
I have a friend that lives just south of Los Angeles. I mentioned that Reno NV was further west than LA. He was sorta startled. Also airplanes going from the east coast (FL) to England fly up the US coast then near Iceland and onto England. It's called the Great Circle and is shorter than flying direct straight to England as you would imagine due to the curvature of the Earth. On a globe, stretch a sting from say Atlanta to England to visualize.
Fascinating! Hard to believe. I feel like running to the toy store and buying one of those wooden maps of the US to actually tip NC on its corner, to check this out.
