Weather Observations and Age-Old Wisdom
Red sky at night, sailors delight
Red sky in the morning, sailors, take warning
Ring around the moon--rain in three days.
A saying I grew up with: "Red in the morning, sailor's warning; red at night, sailor's delight."
A morning rain is like an old woman's dance. It won't last long.
You can tell a severe winter.....watch the white man gathering firewood!
With this news I'm still wondering about what my mother was saying, 3-4 days before and after the first day of spring predicts what the spring weather is going to be.
My grandfather used to tell me: If the hornet's nests are really high in the trees=bad winter. Also, watch the squirrels packing away food, more food=bad winter.
It will be a bad winter if:
• There’s a heavy crop of berries, acorns, and pinecones.
What does it mean for winter if the trees are laden with nuts?? I have so many that I have to rake them up or it is like walking on marbles. Also small healthy branches have fallen due to being so heavy with nuts.
