What Is the Midheaven in Astrology? A Beginner’s Guide to the MC

What is the Midheaven (MC)?

The Medium Coeli (MC), also referred to as the Midheaven, is Latin for “middle of the sky,” and represents the high point in your astrology chart at the time of your birth.

It is one of the four cardinal points and sits on the 10th house cusp of your astrological chart. In other words, the highest point on your chart. While your Sun sign gives clues about your personality, the Midheaven indicates your reputation, public status, and career. It shows your potential. Like a north star, it points to where you can go if you’re willing to do the work.

Once you understand your Midheaven, you can make excellent career decisions. You can also get an idea of how to best show up in the world.

Using myself as an example, I have a Leo Midheaven. Although I’m deeply introverted, this is no shy violet Midheaven! While I prefer hiding away, this placement pushes me to step into the spotlight. After all, Leo is the entertainer of the zodiac. Put a mic in my hand, and I come to life! (Although do not ask me to do karaoke!)

Understanding the Midheaven

The Sun, Moon, and Ascendant are often referred to as “the big three.” Many astrologers claim these three main points deliver most of the information you need to understand yourself. However, the Midheaven should not be overlooked. 

Think of it this way: when you factor your career potential and aspirations, you get a fuller picture of your potential. Work with your Midheaven, and you can achieve your goals—or discover something about yourself that might tip the scales of success in your favor. My personal example above illustrates this perfectly.

Imagine if I resisted my fiery Leo Midheaven and sequestered myself away in my little “bat cave?” Sure, I might feel safe, but there may have been many missed opportunities. By embracing my Midheaven, I created a successful career. Was it tricky? Yes. Being introverted and having a big Midheaven took some time to find the happy medium. I still live like a recluse, but never turn down an opportunity to step on stage. 

How to Find Your Midheaven

First, you’ll need to get a copy of your birth chart. You can cast a chart with software such as Time Passages or Solar Fire. Or you can create one through a website such as astro.com (click on the charts and calculations tab - you might have to create an account first). It’s best if you have your exact time of birth to ensure accuracy.

Once you have your chart, look to the very top. The sign on the cusp of your 10th house is your Midheaven. Simple. 

The Midheaven Through the 12 Signs

Once you’ve found your Midheaven, you can get a sense of what it means for your career and public image. 

For example, Marilyn Monroe had a Taurus Midheaven (see image below), which is excellent for a creative career. Taurus is ruled by Venus, the planet of love, and is known for sensuality. It’s also a fixed sign, which prefers longevity and security. This illustrates her enduring role as a major sex symbol. 

The Twelve Midheaven Signs

Aries: This is the Midheaven for leaders, entrepreneurs, and trailblazers. You’re not content to follow the status quo. Instead, you prefer to take the lead and show the way. You might be known as a passionate, fiery individual. However, you could also be seen as argumentative, due to your Mars rulership. Best careers for you: anything that allows you to function independently. You could excel as a CEO, creative director, motivational speaker, producer, head chef, or the brains behind a start-up. Interestingly, many Aries Midheavens make fantastic teachers because of their ability to inspire. 

Taurus: Taurus Midheavens are grounded, practical, sensuous, and reliable. They know how to keep calm, even when situations are in flux. If you have this Midheaven, you are well-suited to design or creative work. This is because Venus rules Taurus. Other careers that might make you happy: baker, fine artist, landscaper, gardener, caregiver, beautician, or singer. Taurus likes money, so careers in finance could be an excellent choice. Guard against a tendency toward inertia. This could make it hard to achieve goals. I also recommend choosing a career path with some security, such as a job with good benefits. This will lead to less anxiety. 

Gemini: You’re a born communicator if this is your Midheaven. You also possess a high degree of dexterity and adaptability. Gemini on the 10th house cusp means people see you as witty, charming, and chatty. Careers in journalism, writing, marketing, advertising, comedy, songwriting, copywriting, or anything that involves the hands are natural fits. Because you have a curious mind, you might also do well in an academic environment. What to watch out for: a tendency to goof off or fiddle around. If you can’t sit still, you could earn a rep as a flake. (Fun fact: Ernest Hemingway, Charles Dickens, and Jack Kerouac had Gemini Midheavens!)

Cancer: If this is your Midheaven, you care a lot. After all, Cancer is the nurturer of the zodiac. This Midheaven soars in helper roles - teachers, nurses, doctors, nannies, vets, or shopkeepers. Ruled by the Moon, you’ll develop a reputation for being moody - and intuitive. A career in the psychic arts may be right up your alley. Many Cancer Midheavens choose security, which can sometimes cause them to hang on to a job even if they don’t like it. Over time, this creates a sour attitude, something that can be avoided if they took a leap of faith over the “sure thing.”

Leo: A Leo Midheaven means flamboyance, showmanship, creativity, and boldness. Instead of a shy violet, it’s Purple Rain (Prince had a Leo Midheaven)! If you have this Midheaven, you’re not meant to sit by the sidelines - you should be on the main stage. Theater, performing arts, or the music industry are great fits. Also, creative chefs, nightclub promoters, entrepreneurs, beauticians, make-up artists, and deejays suit your creative nature. Remember, Leo is the king of the jungle - you’re a better boss than worker. However, you can be a bit of a pill to work for. When you don’t get your way, you’ll throw tantrums or create drama. Avoid that behavior, and you’ll rule your kingdom. 

Virgo: Virgo wants to serve, so if this is your Midheaven, you might be drawn to work that allows you to be useful. Practical, detail-oriented, and reliable are qualities you’re known for. Although you may appear unassuming, you’re a force to be reckoned with - especially when it comes to work. This is because you are the zodiac’s workaholic. No matter what role you hold, you’ll do your best. Suitable occupations are gardener, horticulturist, botanist, clerical, scientist, bookkeeper, accountant, nurse, psychiatrist, veterinarian, social worker, cleaning, organizing, or administrative work. You’re also a natural teacher, so education might be a great fit. Although you’re an excellent worker, you might be overly critical, something that could annoy coworkers. 

Libra: Libra Midheavens have a reputation for being diplomatic, charming, and reasonable. They can weigh all sides of the coin, a trait that helps them remain objective. This means they make excellent lawyers, judges, diplomats, and politicians. They are also creative, so a career in the arts may also be appealing. Other options include architect, fashion designer, gallery owner, beautician, or counselor. It’s imperative that your work has a social element if this is your Midheaven. Too much time alone and you’ll wilt. 

Scorpio: If you have a Scorpio Midheaven, you have a reputation for intensity. Shallow isn’t in your vocabulary - you’re deep. Therefore, you’ll want a career that challenges you. You’re here to get to the bottom of things, thanks to your keen intuition. Investigation, criminal defense, psychic work, research, emergency room, psychology, or surgery satisfy your need to solve mysteries. You’re also known for your secretive nature, which makes you well-suited for behind-the-scenes activities. Guard against sarcasm and a tendency to brood, two qualities that can create unnecessary conflict with others. 

Sagittarius: Sagittarius is a lover of freedom and truth, so if this is your Midheaven, your commitment to both will stand out. This fiery Midheaven also means you present yourself as passionate, outgoing, and adventurous. You also have a reputation for your philosophical approach to life. Careers that suit your freewheeling nature: education, publishing, broadcasting, publicity, advertising, sales, travel agent, pilot, motivational speaker, transportation, or sports. One thing to watch out for: your bluntness. While honesty is an excellent policy, a brutal truth might alienate others. 

Capricorn: The Goat on your Midheaven indicates an ambitious, serious presence. People see you as a natural leader. Who can blame them? You’re remarkably organized when it counts. This makes it easy for you to step into an administrative role in any organization. Other careers that work well: architect, builder, politician, organizer, developer, CEO, professor, or manager. While you’re positioned for success, be careful about becoming too rigid. No one likes a control freak!

Aquarius: Brilliant, innovative, idealistic. Yep, that’s you if you have this Midheaven. The public sees you as a smart nonconformist, someone who would never sell out. Instead, you prefer to go your own way, while still making room for everyone at your table. Aquarius Midheavens are humanitarians who are never afraid to stand up for what is right. Careers in technology, electronics, or the arts may appeal to you. You can also succeed as a scientist, computer programmer, inventor, human rights advocate, community organizer, musician, astrologer, or professor. While this Midheaven doesn’t mind eccentricity, you mustn’t become offensive. Know when to dial the weird back. 

Pisces: Pisces is a sensitive soul, so if this is your Midheaven, you’ll be known for your compassion. You’re kind, idealistic, and intuitive. You have an uncanny ability to perceive what others are feeling, which helps you form emotional bonds with the public. You’d be great as a counselor, artist, musician, nurse, doctor, zookeeper, vet, charity worker, spiritual advisor, dancer, yoga teacher, or psychotherapist. You must choose an environment that suits your gentle nature. A rough, dramatic space will jangle your nerves. 

Keep in mind, the whole chart matters. Although the Midheaven gives clues to your best career and relationship with the public, you’ll also want to consider your Sun, Moon, and Ascendant, too. Explore the whole chart, and you might find a vocation that you love—and loves you back.
