How Does Our Business Day Calculator Work?

You provide two dates and choose what you would like to treat as non-working days:

  1. Exclude Weekends and U.S. Federal Holidays (Default Option): This removes Saturdays, Sundays, and the 11 recognized U.S. federal holidays.
  2. Exclude Weekends Only: Counts all weekdays, even holidays.
  3. Exclude Sundays Only: Great for industries that operate 6 days a week.

You can also choose to include the end date, which adds one day to the final result: this is helpful when a deadline falls on the final date.

Why Use a Business Day Calculator?

  • Project Management: Plan precisely for deadlines, retirement, or your next vacation—down to the last business day.
  • Shipping Estimates: Figure out when your package actually might arrive (spoiler: not Sunday).
  • Retirement Countdown: Track your remaining workdays with confidence.
  • Legal and Contract Compliance: Ensure you meet deadlines in contracts, filings, and agreements.
  • Time Off Tracking: Simplify PTO (Paid-Time Off) calculations by counting only business days.
  • Payday Countdown: Figure out how many business days until your next paycheck.
  • Vacation Planning: Find out how many days stand between today and your next getaway.

How to Calculate Business Days?

The Old Farmer’s Almanac Business Day Calculator makes it easy to count the number of days between two workdays. Suppose you're scheduling a project, working on a contract, tracking delivery windows, or planning time off. In that case, it automatically skips weekends and U.S. federal holidays to give you an accurate workday count.

What Counts as a Business Day?

By default, business days are Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays—consistent with most office and government schedules. Some industries (such as retail and healthcare) may work on weekends, but this calculator defaults to a traditional Monday/Friday workweek.

How Many Business Days Are in a Year?

In 2025, there are 250 business days (excluding weekends and U.S. federal holidays). Currently, the United States government recognizes 11 federal holidays under federal law (5 U.S.C. § 6103).

What Happens if a Holiday Is on a Weekend?

If a holiday has a set date, such as Veterans Day or Christmas, it sometimes falls on a weekend. Fortunately, we still get time off for that! Typically, when a holiday falls on a Saturday, the Friday before is observed as the holiday. When the holiday is on a Sunday, it will be observed the following Monday. Our calculator reflects these adjustments automatically.

How Are Leap Years Handled?

Our calculator adjusts for leap years automatically, so you don’t have to factor in that extra February day. Leap years mean that we all need to work an extra day (take it up with HR, not us!).
