Types
- ‘Royal Purple’ is a common, easy-to-find cultivar with deep, dusky pink inflorescences and burgundy green leaves. It is hardy in USDA Zones 4-8 and reaches about 12 to 15 feet tall and wide if left unchecked.
- ‘Winecraft Black’ is a dwarf variety, reaching 4 to 6 feet tall and wide. Deeply purple-black foliage and smaller size make it adaptable to growing in large containers.
- ‘Daydream’ blooms in panicles of light pink to maroon with fall foliage in brilliant oranges and purples. It’s cold hardy in USDA Zones 5-8.

My smoke bush (20 years old?) has never "smoked". It always gets tiny little flowers, but I never see any "smoke". Can anyone tell me why? Should I fertilize? I did trim it hard this spring, maybe it will smoke next year!
Thanks!
This spring (2025) I took the Almanac's advice and trimmed my smoke bush to about 6 to 8 inches. I was really worried that I messed it up as it looked awful. Soon, though, it started growing beautifully. Because of the way the main branches were growing, it almost looked like a bonsai in that it had circular "poofs" on each branch. Eventually, they all filled in together, making it look like a bush again. It is absolutely beautiful.
"grows 12 to 15 inches tall". I'm guessing that should be 12 to 15 feet. I'm having visions of Spinal Tap's miniature Stonehenge debacle :D
