Types
Hoyas commonly sold in nurseries as houseplants include:
- Hoya Carnosa cultivars such as ‘Krimson Princess’, a two-toned plant with green leaf edges and white centers; new foliage often displays pink and changes to green in maturity.
- H. pubicalyx (often mislabelled as H. carnosa or H. purpurea-fusca)
- H. kentiana leaves look like a bunch of pea or bean pods hanging off the vine.
- H. kerrii, also referred to as Hoya hearts because the thick leaves are heart-shaped.
- H. lacunosa, a compact, green foliage plant perfect for hanging baskets, is a favorite for its cinnamon-scented flowers and willingness to bloom. Many varieties are available.
- H. linearis is a unique trailing hoya with short, cylindrical leaves; perfect for a small green vertical display; can create a curtain of foliage.

My maternal grandmother had a Hoya, my mother had a Hoya, I have a Hoya, one of my daughters has a Hoya. All from the plant my great grandmother had, given to her by a Hollywood client, she was a psychic. Now my 25 year old grandson has a Hoya. As a matter of fact, he has become a Hoya head, adding new Hoyas he buys online and at shows. His plants are spectacular! I still prefer my Hoya carnosa, with it’s miniature bridal bouquets with the sparkling drop of nectar in the center of each flower!
I have my mother's hoya that was given to her by my Auntie Joy around 1972. Auntie Joy was given the plant earlier by Judge and Mrs. Taylor. All of those sweet people have passed on to heaven, but my hoya remains strong and vibrant. I have given a few plants away and now I'm about ready to make cuttings to give away to our daughter's sister - law to sell at a benefit for pets who need homes. Actually, that's how I found this wonderful site to know how to properly acquire cuttings from my plant to give away. Grateful fo your information. This plant has lived in Bishop, CA, West Covina, CA, Van Nuys, CA and currently resides in Sandy Springs, GA. It has thrived in every location without extreme pampering. It is a wonder. grateful for your information.
My sister gave me one of her Hoyas. The flowers had a nice fragrance and would drip a sweet sap. The kids would enjoy a treat on their finger dipped in it!
