We have a black walnut the "snuck" up to Long Island in some plants I took from my grandparents' farm in south-eastern VA. It gew and is now over the roof. It shades my upper deck, but it stains both decks - upper and lower every year because the nuts fall, break and I can't getthem off the decks fast enough. Also, the squirrels chew ont hem and drop huk pieces which add to the stain. MY grandparents are long gone, and I hate to cut the tree, but every two years, we are scrubbing, bleching and repainting our decks. What PIA!
It's been 50 or 60 years now, Grandpa had black walnuts in Tiffin, Ohio. He would gather them up and put them in the gravel alley along side the house. Between the sun and very moderate traffic the hulls would be mostly removed. He made a chicken wire cylinder about 3ft across with crank to spin it and mounted it on a frame. He'd put the nuts and a little gravel in it and crank while the hose ran on it. We always found the bench vice was best for cracking. Man, I loved eating those nuts!
Take the hulls off of your walnuts while still green The nut meat will not be as bitter. You will enjoy them a whole bunch more
First go at this. Many are already brown. We has a lot of rain and it has been a treat to use my knife scraping off the shells. Any advice? Maybe not good? Thanks!
Thousand Cankers Disease is infecting Black Walnut across North America and including Canada, where I live . It is spread by a native insect but the fungus is invasive, thus the trees have no defences against it. My 35 year old stand of Black Walnut trees has been infected for at least ten years. They say it is fatal, but so far although my trees are disfigured, they are surviving. The lesson? Plant Black Walnuts alone, away from other Black Walnut Trees.
I have a black walnut tree that fell down on my property. Can black walnut be used for firewood?
We have been tapping the black walnut trees to make a syrup from the sap. It will take about 45 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup. It's a nice change from maple syrup.
I have a black walnut tree in my yard. It bears lots of nuts, never pick them.
My Black Walnut, out on the street verge, was a volunteer and I just let it grow before ever I heard about their herbicide tendencies. I can attest that irises have no problem growing profusely around mine. So far, I haven't managed to harvest any nuts, because there are so many squirrels in my neighborhood. Probably one of them was responsible for planting mine in the first place!
Evem though I have 7 black walnut trees all producing nuts, I get very few nuts myself because of the neighborhood squirrels. But it's great they keep planting more trees.
