I have a black walnut tree in my yard and we have lived here for 40 years. This year is the heaviest nut formation I have ever witnessed.
Another dark side to black walnut trees is they are very toxic to horses. All a horse has to do is step on the fruit or nut and they become very sick and may even die. Same goes for if there are any black walnut shavings or sawdust in their bedding, same toxic results.
Enjoyed this feature and comments. In doing research on Canada West (Ontario) in the 1700s-early 1800s, I used the wonderful book, THE TRAIL OF THE BLACK WALNUT by G. Elmore Reamon (1957). Reamon focused on the immigrants from regions we collectively call Germany, who came first to New York and Pennsylvania, then moved to Canada West. In their Conestoga wagons (designed and constructed by the "Plain Folk'" in their settlements on the Conestoga River in Pennsylvania), they travelled the "trail o the Black Walnut" knowing they would find fertile soil where the trees grew.
I grew up with a black walnut tree in my backyard. Everything described here is exactly what I remember. We did crack and eat them , however, my mom most used them to bake that dreaded Christmas fruitcake. She would send them (by request) overseas to my brother and his friends. Thanks for the insight and sharing. This brought back many childhood memories 🙏🏽

We had a large black walnut at the edge of our yard. We played under it. I remember hauling the nuts and having stained hands for a while. Mom used the nuts in her Christmas fudge.
We love the airy shade of our black walnut trees and enjoy watching the nuts grow and mature. Our dogs never had any interest or problem with them.
Memorial Day we made honey/walnut ice cream with some of last year's nuts. The recipe we use is a custard base, so we add lightly toasted walnut pieces to the milk mixture as it cooks, then freeze. A very tasty treat!
Would love to have that recipe??
