Notable Dates in April
April 1, April Fools’ Day, Mother Nature will not be kidding around, with cold and snow expected from New England through the Great Lakes and into the Upper Midwest, rain in the Heartland, and rain and snow in the High Plains and Intermountain West. South Florida, the Gulf Coast, and northern Alaska will be sunny, while showers dot much of the rest of the country. Canadians can expect rain and/or snow from from Atlantic Canada into southern Quebec; in southern Ontario, the eastern Prairies, and southern British Columbia; and from the Yukon into the Northwest Territories.
The TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE will happen on April 8! Skies look to be mainly dry along the path of totality from northern New England through the eastern Great Lakes and from the southern Heartland through the southern Plains to the Texas/Mexico border. Showers could cloud the Ohio Valley. Partial-eclipse viewing should be aided by dry skies from the Southeast and Florida into the Deep South and from the Upper Midwest through the High Plains and Rockies, southwestward all the way to the California coast. Folks in Atlantic Canada and the St. Lawrence Valley can expect sunny and dry skies, while partial-eclipse viewing in other parts of the country may be dampened by rain and/or snow. April 22—both Earth Day and the start of Passover—will see showers make for indoor plans from New England to the mid-Atlantic coast, across Florida, from the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest through the Heartland and the southern and High Plains to the northern Rockies, and across southern Alaska and much of Hawaii. Elsewhere, sunny and dry conditions will favor outside activities. Rain will dampen outdoor plans from Atlantic Canada across southern Ontario and the eastern Prairies, while “sunny and dry” will be the norm elsewhere in Canada.
On the U.S.’s National Arbor Day, April 26, expect natural watering from showers for newly planted trees across much of the country. Dress warmly if you’re out planting trees in the High Plains, though, as rain and snow are expected. Clear, pleasant weather for outdoor activities will prevail across the southern Plains, along the West Coast, and in northern Alaska and central Hawaii.
Oh, how fresh the wind is blowing!
See! the sky is bright and clear,
Oh, how green the grass is growing!
April! April! are you here?

April Weather Lore
On the edge of winter storms and spring blooms, April graces us with warmer days that hint at what’s to come—but often reminds us that the cooler weather isn’t done just yet!
In addition to the famous “April showers bring May flowers,” there are a number of proverbs that speak of April weather:
Cloudy April, dewy May.
When April blows his horn,
It’s good for hay and corn.
A dry March, wet April, and cool May,
Fill barn, cellar, and bring much hay.
And, of course, we can’t resist including this gardening advice:
Plant your ‘taters when you will,
They won’t come up before April.
Only time will tell if these proverbs hold true this year. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
