Why Mercury retrograde gets blamed for everything—and how to work with it instead.

Mercury retrograde has a reputation for chaos—missed messages, travel delays, and technology glitches. But is it really that bad? The other day, my husband tried to call me while I was in the middle of a livestream, and minutes later, I was running upstairs to a smoke-filled kitchen and a forgotten pot of ramen.

Here’s what happened.
My family knows not to bug me when I’m doing an event, so I ignored his call. A few minutes later, a panicked text popped up: “Emergency. Turn off the burner.”

He had forgotten about a pot of ramen and couldn’t get to the house in time. By the time I reached the kitchen, the room was smoky, and the saucepan was ruined. Thankfully, it wasn’t something worse.

A friend quipped, “Blame Mercury retrograde!”

While we might be quick to blame this planetary bad boy, it might also be human error. I’d like to think it’s the latter, but it doesn’t escape my notice that my usually responsible Virgo husband isn’t the forgetful type. Perhaps Mercury retrograde did play a role?

Why Mercury Retrograde Gets Such a Bad Reputation

Mercury retrograde has become astrology’s most notorious cosmic event.

Several times a year, the planet Mercury appears to move backward in the sky during what astrologers call Mercury retrograde. Known as retrograde, this phenomenon is traditionally associated with communication mix-ups, travel delays, and technological glitches.

Over time, that reputation has grown thanks to social media and pop culture. When emails vanish, flights are delayed, or someone sends a regrettable text, it’s easy to blame Mercury retrograde.

But much of Mercury retrograde’s fearsome reputation comes from misunderstanding. While astrologers do associate this transit with miscommunication and delays, it’s not the cosmic disaster it’s often made out to be.

The Mythology (and the Mayhem)

Mercury is the fastest-moving planet in the solar system. Is it any surprise, then, that it’s named after the Roman messenger god, who was also known for his speed? Similar to Hermes, the Greek deity Mercury wears a hat and shoes adorned with wings, symbols of freedom, lightness, and flight.

Not only was Mercury a messenger, but also a god of commerce, travelers, trickery, and thieves. He was known for being clever and could travel freely to the underworld. At times, he used his position as messenger to the gods to serve his own purposes; hence, he became known as a “trickster.” As you might guess, Mercury has a mischievous streak.

In astrology, Mercury is associated with travel, communication, technology, and contracts. That means you might experience challenges (or tricks!) in these areas when Mercury retrograde happens.

Thanks to social media, many folks are aware of Mercury retrograde. Like Murphy’s Law, it has become a cosmic scapegoat for anything and everything that goes wrong! People blame travel snafus and website crashes on this transit, but perhaps human error should take some of the responsibility.

Is There Any Truth to Mercury Retrograde Being a Troublemaker?

When you consider the Moon controls the tides, it might be wise to think other planets have an impact, too. Of course, negative confirmation bias plays a role - it’s easy to notice the “bad” things, which often means we give things such as Mercury retrograde more weight than it deserves. Perhaps we need to look at the Trickster with new eyes?

That begins by throwing the standard interpretations out the window (“bad things are going to happen!”) and taking a proactive approach when this retrograde shows up.

What about the Mercury retrograde “shadow period?”

You might hear some folks claim the “shadow period,” also called “retroshade,” is worse than the actual retrograde. When astrologers mention the shadow, they are talking about the two weeks before and after Mercury stations retrograde. The pre-shadow is like a preview of what’s to come, while the post-shadow is the “clean up.”

Whether this set of Mercury retrograde bookends is more challenging than the retrograde is up for debate. Personally, I always find the shadow to be harsher. But that might be because I have six Mercury-ruled planets in my natal chart!

What if you have Mercury retrograde in your natal chart?

At the time you’re born, all of the planets line up in different signs, which is what makes you unique. You might have a retrograde planet or more, a sign that you express that planet’s energy in a non-stereotypical way. Folks with Mercury retrograde in their natal chart tend to think outside the box and process information differently.

Contrary to some beliefs, if you have Mercury retrograde in your natal chart, that does not mean you’ll slide through the transit without a few bumps. Don’t assume you’re immune to the trickery!

Make the Retrograde Work for You

While Mercury retrograde has earned a reputation for trouble, astrologers often view it less as a disaster and more as a period that encourages slowing down and reviewing plans.

You’ve probably heard that you shouldn’t travel, sign contracts, launch new projects, or shoot your mouth off when Mercury is retrograde. While that last part is true, the other “rules” are not hard and fast. Instead, it’s better to adopt a chill, pragmatic approach during this funky transit.

Here are a few things to do if you want to get Mercury retrograde on your side.

  1. Slow down. This is not the time to rush. Think of Mercury retrograde as an opportunity to press pause. Take time to ponder before making decisions.
  2. Back up all of your devices: computer, cellphone, iPad. If you own a website, be sure to back it up, too.
  3. Tidy up your inbox. Clear out old emails, answer overdue correspondence, unsubscribe from newsletters, and delete your spam folder.
  4. If you must sign a contract, read the fine print carefully. Do not skip this part!
  5. While it’s advised to avoid purchasing technology during Mercury retrograde, sometimes you don’t have a choice. If you must, be sure to get a warranty. I learned that the hard way one time, when my brand-new laptop died shortly after purchase. Thankfully, my warranty meant everything was covered.
  6. Be sure to double and triple-check your travel itinerary. Also, download the airline app to receive alerts about delays or issues.
  7. It’s also a good idea to carve out extra travel time. Create a buffer so you’re not rushing to the gate if your flight is delayed. If you’re driving, map out detours and road construction. Leave early to account for traffic jams and gas stops.
  8. Think before you speak, post, or hit send. (Ahem…you should probably follow this advice in general.)
  9. It’s the perfect time to weed your garden and declutter your closets! Put those tasks on the calendar and have at it!
  10. Be mindful of sensitive conversations. Things can be misinterpreted. It might be better to put that “little talk” off until the energy is better.
  11. Keep a sense of humor. Remember, Mercury likes mischief. Learn to laugh off the little things. Not everything is some sort of astrological punishment!
  12. Remember the “re” rule: revisit, review, reflect, reorganize, redo, rethink, reconnect. Re is your BFF during Mercury retrograde!

Mercury Retrograde Through the Signs

Each Mercury retrograde has a different “flavor” depending on which zodiac sign it is transiting at the time. These tips will ensure you avoid unnecessary drama.

Aries:  When Mercury is retrograde in Aries, you’ll want to keep your impulses in check. Be mindful before going on spending sprees or making hasty decisions. Tempers can become easily frayed. Watch out for road rage.

Taurus: Taurus can be slow and stubborn. Imagine that energy slowing down even more. That’s Mercury in Taurus retrograde. Nothing seems to move; situations stagnate, and arguments can turn into grudge matches. It’s best to unclench your jaw and go with the flow.

Gemini: Your words can get you in hot water during a Mercury retrograde in Gemini. Zipping your lip and taking a social media break will keep you in the clear. (Psst…you might receive scintillating gossip now. Keep it under your sun bonnet!) Because Gemini rules short trips, be sure your travel plans have plenty of breathing room. This retrograde can also bring trouble with mail, as in lost correspondence - both email and snail mail.

Cancer: Emotions can color thinking, leading to poor decision-making. Old issues from the past may come up again, leading to new hurts. Arguments with family could also add unnecessary stress. Best plan: ground and center with a side of boundaries. It’s an excellent time to repair your home. Complete those old renovation projects you’ve put off.

Leo: Like Mercury retrograde in Aries, this transit can be impulsive. But also: theatrical. Don’t make a big deal out of small things. You might find you’re more susceptible to flattery. A bit of discernment will prevent your ego from getting in your way. Be careful with the stock market. Avoid risky investments.

Virgo: While Mercury loves being in Virgo, it can bring out a prickly, overly critical vibe. Take any and all criticism with a grain of salt. If you need to dish it out, add sugar. This is an excellent time to reorganize every aspect of your life. A declutter session during this transit could be the most effective cleanup act ever! Also, watch out for work drama such as equipment failure, office gossip, or unproductive bickering with coworkers.

Libra: During this retrograde, it’s best to avoid lawsuits. Negotiations are likely to stall, creating frustration. Relationships can get complicated. A little TLC and compromise go a long way. You’ll also want to steer clear of drastic makeovers. Resist the urge to chop your hair or go under the knife until this retrograde is long gone. One more thing to guard against: passive-aggressive communication. It’s better to be straightforward than to beat around the bush.

Scorpio: I’ve found that secrets seem to come out of the woodwork when Mercury stations retrograde in Scorpio. If you don’t want your private business to become public, it’s better to guard your information carefully. Likewise, you’ll want to exercise caution with other people’s indiscretions. Some things are no one’s business.

Sagittarius: Sagittarius is a truth teller, but when Mercury is retrograde in this sign, the truth could become twisted. Search for facts before you react. Also, a bit of tact will serve you well. You can deliver truthful statements without being brutal. Of all the retrogrades, this is the one where you’re most likely to experience travel problems. It’s better to avoid traveling now, unless you don’t have a choice.

Capricorn: There is no better time to organize your work life. Declutter your files, clean your desk, delete old information, and put everything where it belongs. Career faux pas are possible, but can be avoided if you keep it professional. Because Capricorn rules government, voting issues can arise during this retrograde. It’s also not the best time for real estate matters. This means it’s better to avoid selling or buying.

Aquarius: When Mercury is retrograde in Aquarius, misunderstandings with friends are possible. Keep the lines of communication open. You might also find that certain friendships come to a close now. If you’ve outgrown your circle, let it go. Aquarius is associated with technology, so make sure you double up on your backups!

Pisces: Like Cancer, Pisces is ultra-sensitive. Feelings could get in the way, making it hard to be objective. You’ll need to pause and breathe before making decisions. If you plan to travel overseas, have a plan B in place. Channel your frustrations into creative projects.

As you can see, Mercury retrograde isn’t some cosmic fiend out to get you. Instead, it’s an invitation to mindfulness: slow down, rethink plans, and pay closer attention to the details. Taking your time to pause and reflect before making a move is great advice, not just for this transit but anytime.
