Christa McAuliffe Day is observed annually in New Hampshire to honor the legacy of Sharon Christa McAuliffe, a high school teacher from Concord who was selected to be the first civilian teacher in space. She tragically lost her life in the Challenger space shuttle disaster on January 28, 1986, along with six other crew members. McAuliffe was chosen from more than 11,000 applicants nationwide for NASA’s Teacher in Space Project, symbolizing the importance of education and inspiring generations to pursue science, exploration, and teaching.
