Of all the things that have been said about Memorial Day, this is the only thing that makes sense. It was originally called Decoration Day. It was proclaimed by General John Logan in 1868 as May 30th, but didn't say what day it fell on. Why not May 31st since it's the last day of the month? One look at the calendar for 1868 and you find that May 30th was a Saturday, meaning that May 31st would be a Sunday, and that was the Lord's day, when nothing like that would have been done. Even newspapers of the day didn't print on Sundays. It was called Decoration
