Astronomically speaking, calling the solstices the "beginnings" of summer and winter is a gross misnomer. The movements of the sun actually make these the midpoints of the solar cycles, as reflected by the names "midsummer" and "midwinter" used by our ancestors. This would also make the spring equinox the middle of spring, and my garden agrees!
