I moved into my grandparents' old home in 2011. The black walnut tree in the backyard has been both a saving grace and headache. After losing some chickens to a heatwave we moved their house to under the walnut tree and they've been happy (and cooler) ever since. However, I am quite tired of stepping on walnuts and almost rolling my ankles over and over. I've picked them up, I've left them in place. I've tried harvesting but discovered if you don't put them somewhere squirrel proof to dry, the squirrels will help themselves! I clean broken bits of shell off my picnic table all summer and fall. I love the height and spread of this beautiful tree, don't love so much the fruit. And I can only imagine what the chickens think every time a nut drops onto their roof! haha
