In her book, "The Way to Cook," Miss Child offers the following bit of information: To keep lentils from losing their shape, soak in cold water for one hour before cooking. (About 3 cups water to one cup lentils.) Drain, then cook as called for by the recipe you're using.
Easy, and it works. This way you don't have to worry about catching them "just in time," to keep them from becoming lentil mush instead of lentil soup/pilaf/salad.
