Try this method. Break a chopstick so that it fits across about 1/3 of a frying pan. Cut off the tough bottoms of the asparagus. Place the asparagus so the tips are on the chopstick, add about 1/4" of veggie stock in the pan ( just covering the chopstick ), cover, bring to a boil, reduce to simmer and cooking for about 5 minutes. The tops stay firm and the stalks soften up.
