Hi Cathy, and thanks for your question. For slug and snail deterrence, I’d focus on creating a used coffee grounds border around your entire garden. If that seems insufficient, they can also be placed around individual plants that seem most susceptible. 

Once composted, coffee grounds are neutral enough to be safe for your entire garden. But pre-composting, the nitrogen and caffeine in coffee grounds can potentially cause issues for roses, lilacs, hydrangeas, and lilies, as well as some vegetables and herbs, and new plantings or seedlings of any sort. I’d give them a wider berth. And don’t sweat it too much. In most cases, the hardship caused to plants by the presence of the grounds is significantly less than the damage those slugs and snails can do.
