A few years ago, we moved back to my family farm as caretakers for my aging mother. In the decades we were living in other provinces, my mother planted a number of Chinese Elms, including one maybe 7 feet away from the kitchen window. She wanted the shade. Today, it is a huge problem. I can see it's been cut back a few times, but it kept regrowing. There are branches overhanging the roof, the patio blocks are heaved, and cracks are starting to show in the basement wall. Because it's so close to the house, we will have to hire a company to safely take it down in pieces - something we can't do on our fixed income.
And that doesn't even take into account the millions of seeds it drops, every spring, along with the dozen or more around the yard and garden areas, that fall so heavily, they literally smother our garden sprouts!
