Hi Frances,

Happy New Year! Storing seeds in a cool and dry location is definitely the best approach to having viable seeds to plant the following spring. Keeping them dry is very important.

For best results, store your seeds in tightly sealed glass containers. If you have a number of different seeds, you can store them each in individual paper packets and put them together in a large container. If you want to go a step further, you can add a small amount of silica gel or powdered milk to the container (wrap the powdered milk in a piece of cheese cloth) as both will act as a desiccant to absorb moisture to keep seeds dry.

A temperature between 32° and 41°F is ideal, so if you don’t feel as though your garage provides that consistent temperature window you can also store seeds in the refrigerator. Good luck!
