I have an overgrown loquat tree in my front yard. It is showing signs of disease/stress with lots of browning tips of branches. I'm trying to cut away the dead stuff and pruning out the middle portion of the tree to create some good airflow. But, I'm realizing that it's just too tall for our purposes and needs to be cut way back. How much can I prune off the top without the killing the tree. I'm thinking of just eliminating the tallest branches down to or close to the stump to get it back to a manageable size but don't want to shock it.
