I disagree with leaving your lawn long. The opposite is generally true. You need to cut your lawn short (3" for me) to prevent winter mold or other fungus development as the snow mats down long grass. Every landscaper I've spoken with agrees. We're in SW Idaho and only get ~12" of snow per winter - but that's enough to cause damage if it sits on the lawn long enough.
