They may be good for plants but they cause allot of damage to the wood around the house. I have a number of exposed 2X4 and 4X4s with holes and they do damage the structure and support. Even the painted ones they tunnel into the ends as well as the rest of the beam.
Down here in South Georgia they are not my friends. While the damage to wood from the drilling activities of a single bee is slight, the subsequent year's broods will expand the tunnel through branching activities and may cause considerable structural damage. Now the males that hover around and protect a area but they dont have a stinger. The female is the one with the stinger.
