Like a compass, certain influences help guide the course of our lives—shaping our identity, roots, relationships, and ambitions. In astrology, these guiding forces are known as the Cardinal Points.
What Are the Cardinal Points?
For centuries, people have used astrology as a symbolic language to reflect on life’s direction from a different angle. It begins with a birth chart—a map of the sky at the moment you were born.
On this chart are the four Cardinal Points. Together, they outline four essential areas of life: your sense of self, your home and family life, your partnerships, and your career or public path.
The four Cardinal Points on an astrology chart: Ascendant, Imum Coeli, Descendant, and Midheaven.
Look more closely at the chart above. You’ll see it’s divided into 12 sections called houses, each representing a different part of life. The Cardinal Points mark the starting lines of four of those sections—the ones connected to identity, home, relationships, and career. They also form the strong cross shape you see in the center of the chart.
Each Cardinal Point has a name and a distinct role: the Ascendant, the Imum Coeli (IC), the Descendant, and the Midheaven (MC).
Why These Points Matter
As astrologer and author Yesbelt Fernandez explains, “The Cardinal Points are important because they show the main directions of life: who we are, where we feel safe, how we connect with others, and how we show up in the world. Understanding them shows where the biggest changes and decisions in life tend to happen—and how those changes affect other areas of our lives.”
In other words, these four points mark the areas of life where growth, change, and turning points are most likely to unfold.
If an important planet sits near one of these angles in your own birth chart, that area of life may feel especially significant or defining.
The same idea applies over time. When a planet in today’s sky passes over one of these points—a movement called a “transit”—it can signal a new chapter connected to identity, home, relationships, or career.
She adds, “I think of the Cardinal Points as personal seasons. Each one aligns with a phase of the Moon. The Midheaven matches the New Moon as a time for planning. The Ascendant reflects the Waxing Moon, when we take action. The IC corresponds to the Full Moon, bringing insight and illumination. The Descendant reflects the Waning Moon, a time to finish projects and let go of what no longer fits.”
Why They’re Called “Cardinal”
They’re called “cardinal” because they correspond with the four cardinal signs of the zodiac: Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn—signs traditionally associated with the start of each season. When you consider their themes, you can see the connection: Aries (self), Cancer (home), Libra (relationships), and Capricorn (ambition).
These points are calculated using the exact time and place you were born. The sign rising on the eastern horizon at that moment becomes your Ascendant, also known as your Rising sign. On a birth chart, it appears on the left side of the wheel (see the image above).
The Cardinal Points in Action
To see how this works, consider musician Prince’s birth chart (shown below). On the left side of the wheel is his Rising sign. In his case, the symbol there represents Scorpio—a sign often associated with intensity and emotional depth—which shaped the powerful presence he projected.
At the very top of the chart is the Midheaven. The symbol in that position represents Leo, a sign linked with creativity and performance—fitting for someone who became a bold and unforgettable entertainer. Across the wheel is the Descendant; in Prince’s chart, that position falls in Taurus, a sign known for steadiness and loyalty in close relationships.
Even without reading every symbol, you can see how these four key points—left, top, right, and bottom—form the backbone of the chart. Together, they describe how he showed up in the world, where he felt rooted, how he connected with others, and how he stepped into his public role.

Let’s Break Each Cardinal Point Down
The Ascendant: How You Show Up
The Ascendant, also called your Rising sign, reflects how you present yourself to the world. It shapes first impressions, your style, and how you approach new situations. Astrologers often look at your Sun, Moon, and Rising sign together—sometimes called the “Big Three”—as the foundation of your personality.
Yesbelt adds, “The Ascendant reveals how you move through life and take action on what matters to you. Think of it as your default operating style.”
Your Sun sign may describe your inner self, but the Ascendant is the face you show the world. For example, I’m a Gemini Sun with a Libra Rising. At heart, I’m curious and restless (very Gemini). But when people first meet me, they see Libra qualities: diplomacy, good manners, and a polished appearance.
The Imum Coeli (IC): Your Roots
Imum Coeli—often shortened to IC—means “bottom of the sky.” It sits at the base of your chart and reflects your roots, home life, and private world. This is where you feel safe and grounded.
As Yesbelt explains, “The IC shows your home life, including the family you grew up with and the home you create for yourself. It reveals what helps you feel steady and what matters most to you.”
My own IC is in Aquarius, a sign known for originality and independence. My home is colorful, eclectic, and filled with books, animal figurines, and unusual cookbooks—very on brand.
The Descendant: Your Partnerships
Directly opposite your Ascendant is the Descendant. If the Rising sign describes you as an individual, the Descendant describes how you relate to others. It reflects the qualities you’re drawn to in close partnerships—romantic or otherwise—and how you approach commitment.
For example, I have Aries in this position, a sign associated with boldness and directness. That shows up in my relationships—I’m straightforward and value honesty. (Sometimes that reads as “bossy,” depending on who you ask.)
The Midheaven (MC): Your Public Path
At the very top of your chart is the Midheaven. This point relates to career, reputation, and how you’re seen in the wider world. Some astrologers describe it as your calling—the role you grow into over time.
Working in Pairs
Although each Cardinal Point has its own meaning, they don’t operate alone. They sit opposite one another in the chart, creating two natural pairings.
Ascendant & Descendant This pair reflects the balance between independence and partnership.
IC& Midheaven This pair represents private life and public life—home and career.
How to Find Your Cardinal Points
On a chart wheel, the Ascendant appears on the left, the Midheaven at the top, the Descendant on the right, and the IC at the bottom—like the four directions on a compass.
Because these points depend on your exact birth time and place, accuracy matters. You can create a free birth chart at astro.com to see yours.
Getting to the Point
The four Cardinal Points—Ascendant, Imum Coeli, Descendant, and Midheaven—mark the main chapters of your life: identity, home, relationships, and career. They reveal where you’ve been and the direction you may be heading.
Explore your Cardinal Points and see where they’re guiding you. As Prince once said, it’s all part of “this thing called life.”
