William H. Kofoed

Prolific American Editor, Writer, and Magazine Publisher

William H. Kofoed (1894–1976) was a prolific American editor, writer, and magazine publisher whose career spanned the golden age of pulp fiction and celebrity journalism. Born in Philadelphia alongside his twin brother Jack, Kofoed launched his career as a newspaper reporter before transitioning into fiction and magazine publishing. He was the founding editor of Fight Stories and later edited Jack Dempsey’s Fight Magazine, The Thinker, and Movie Diary, among many others.

Kofoed’s publishing ventures often featured contributions from his brother Jack, a well-known journalist and war correspondent. The two were also part of the vibrant pulp and entertainment scene of the 1930s, and their connections extended into notable historical circles, including attending a post-truce celebration with Al Capone. Over his lifetime, Kofoed edited a wide array of publications—from detective stories and movie magazines to general-interest digests—leaving behind a legacy as one of the driving forces behind mid-20th century popular magazines.
