The Laidback Gardener
Larry Hodgson is a prolific garden writer, speaker, and plant enthusiast based in Québec City. A self-taught horticulturist, Larry learned gardening from his father and has nurtured a lifelong passion for plants ever since. Though trained as a language teacher, he found his true calling in writing about the natural world, combining his love of words and gardening into a vibrant career.
Larry has written for more than 30 gardening magazines across North America and Europe and served as editor-in-chief for several publications including HousePlant Magazine, Fleurs, Plantes et Jardins, and À Fleur de Pot. He is the author of over 60 books in both English and French, including The Garden Lover’s Guide to Canada, Houseplants for Dummies, and Making the Most of Shade.
Known to many through his television and radio work, Larry currently hosts gardening segments on CKIA-FM and Radio Ville-Marie, as well as the popular TV show Dans mon jardin avec Larry Hodgson on Québec’s TéléMag network. He has also lectured extensively throughout North America and Europe and served as president of the Garden Writers Association from 2013 to 2015.
At home, Larry tends a lush, experimental garden that surrounds his bungalow—brimming with rare plants, personal trials, and zero lawn. He lives and gardens in USDA Zone 3, where he writes daily posts for his widely-read blog, The Laidback Gardener, in both English and French.
