Many years ago, I was fishing from the bank, and I heard something like a crunching noise, and looked down near my feet, and there was a very large Dragon Fly eating what appeared to be another Dragon Fly. The only thing left, after it was finished, were the wings of the departed Dragon Fly. Gotta love Mother Nature!!
The other week, I went out to the mailbox. I live in a rural area.
There was a dragonfly just sitting on a tree branch. I started talking to it. And it came closer to me. I stuck out my finger and it climbed on, and we talked a bit more. It finally flew away. Think it may have been my husband of 32 years, who passed 8/3/2025. We both liked them.
We live on a pristine freshwater pond. The day following my mother's passing, I was visited by a dragonfly. 37 years later, a visiting dragonfly is the reincarnation of my mother
Excellent article and photos! I live in the desert of Southern California where it is very dry most of the year. I was surprised to discover that we have dragonflies and damselflies that live in this climate. Several years ago I was out outside and saw a cluster of something flying around near a shed and pine tree. It was a mass of dragonflies swarming around and it lasted for about five minutes. It was amazing! I have also seen dragonflies and damselflies sitting on rocks. So cool!
PS: I just looked up the video I took at the time. It was August 30, 2020.
Every year we battle with yellow jackets nesting in the walls and under the siding. One nest was all the way across the ceiling ( in the rafters ) all the way across the room ! I had read that all wasps, hornets etc., hate dragonflies ! I looked in every garden center and what-not store for plastic dragonflies, and even the internet and could not find any. So I made some from pipe cleaners and glass beads then strategicly placed them in various places outdoors. NO MORE yellow jackets ! ( so far . . . ) Has anyone else heard of this ? Nature is amazing !
What a great idea!
Nice!
living in a rural community of Massachusetts, we have a spring feed stream running the length of our property before joining s pond on our southern border. Wildlife abounds with otter, muskrats, woodchucks, variety of turtles, frogs, snakes and nesting birds including wood ducks, bluebirds, tree swallows, red winged blackbirds, yellow warblers and more. But for my wife and I spending lazy summers hours with dragonflies is a real treat
Thank you for the wonderful article and the photographs, gorgeous. Everyone's comments here are also very beautiful. I live in Toronto, Canada on Lake Ontario and we are blessed with these aerial acrobatics in summer, they surf the air currents, as we walk along the boardwalk and shoreline. Many years ago I live in Japan near the Seto Inland Sea. The dragonflies were quite large it seemed, black with white markings. My research indicates these are Shiokara-tombo (shio=salt) as the white looks like sprinkles of salt. Thanks so much, I love the Almanac!
