Good article / writings about this particular wild mushroom. Noted that Paul Stamet is mentioned, he has a very informative book and get his emails occasionally. Believe he's from Oregon or Washington state. Another great source is Dr. Weil (AZ), very notable wild mushroom health suggestions and many recipes. I Have about 14 mushroom books and tromp the Vermont woods a lot in searching. A book I highly recommend is the Audubon Mushroom book, small in size but with a lot of info and pictures. Species covered are from Choice to poisonous and how to combat the toxins. I have researched many mushrooms, identified them and consumed. Wild mushrooms are heads above the commercial ones. In October in VT, it's the changing of the seasons time with a lot of rain and winds. The moisture pops the mushrooms up seemingly in a dew hours, so keep looking.
But your in competition finding mushrooms as deer also enjoy them. I found a bunch of Chicken Mushrooms and was going to pick them the next day. But they were gone, a deer beat me to them. Oyster Mushrooms are found on dead sugar maples, I've pick about 2 bushels off one tree, using a ladder to assist. Look forward to Cotober each year. So much can be written about my experiences. Just research to be safe.
