My grandfather was Portuguese and was from the old country. He lived in New England and would put chicken manure in a barrel and he would keep the barrel topped off he would let it sit and would dip some of the water mixture off the top and put it on his field garden. He lived on the island of Jamestown, RI and farmed a couple of acres. This process is what my father told me how my grandpa did it. He got eggs and fertilizer from the chickens.
He was an avid gardener having to feed 8 kids. Hope this helps. Just keep your barrel topped off of water.
