Even painted, they aren’t expected to last more than a year or two at most. As for what got to them, maybe they just dried out, their innards would be like sawdust at this point, so perhaps it just sprung a leak. Unless there were other signs, we can’t think of a pest that would be attracted to the gourd at that age and condition.
